The Fires of Vulcan

A Big Finish Audio Adventure by Steve Lyons, featuring the seventh Doctor and Mel

Release date: September 2000
Director: Gary Russell
Producers: Jason Haigh-Ellery, Jacqueline Rayner, Gary Russell
Production Code: 7F/A

Two thousand years ago, a cataclysmic volcanic eruption wiped the Roman city of Pompeii from the face of the Earth. It also buried the Doctor's TARDIS...

Arriving in Pompeii one day for the disaster, the Doctor and Mel find themselves seperated from their ship and entangled in local politics. With time running out, they fight to escape from the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. But how can they succeed when history itself is working against them?

Continuity

Mel has encountered UNIT previously (Business Unusual). She built a replica Mount Vesuvius at primary school and learned Latin at some point.

Comments

"'I've seen the future, Mel. I know what will happen - What must happen.'"

The TARDIS arrives in Pompeii, where the Doctor knows the TARDIS is destined to be buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Time cannot be cheated - the TARDIS must be buried, and he and Mel must be trapped there.

The first audio adventure featuring Melanie Bush is excellent - easily making up for Head Games! Despite the Doctor acting more like he did in later seasons, it fits with the story, and the fact he knows what the future holds for Mel and himself, just for this story...
