These adventures are scripts that were considered but later
rejected, or television stories that were not part of the series. This is
hardly an exhaustive list, and additions are welcome.
Season 23
Rejected scripts from Trial of a Time Lord
Attack from the Mind (1985)
Intended to be story three of Trial of a Time Lord, this script by David
Halliwell was dropped. The Doctor and Mel arrive on a planet and encounter
the sadistic Freds and peaceful Penelopeans. Most of the scenes involve
threats of dismemberment, decapitation and other fun things; at one point
Mel is killed. Naturally, everything isn't as it seems...
I'm not really fond of this script.
The Last Adventure (1985)
Another story considered for story three of the Trial season, Christopher
Bidmead's script was also dropped. This was originally called "In the
Hollows of Time" and written for Peri, so between this and the author's
background in computers, it's difficult to tell how Mel would have fared.
Paradise Five (1985)
Another potential story three for the Trial season, this script was written
by Sapphire and Steel creator P.J. Hammond. The Doctor and Mel infiltrate the
Leisure complex of the Paradise system where the clients are mysteriously
disappearing. Looks good from the plot outline.
Time Incorporated (1986)
The final part of the Trial series was to be written by Robert Holmes and end
with the Doctor and the Valeyard trapped in the Matrix. When Mr Holmes was
admitted to hospital, all that existed was the first draft of Episode one.
Eric Saward took over the writing, his script involving the Valeyard attempting
to hold the Universe to ransom by threatening to open a Time Vent. The
matrix interior took on an Industrial Revolution appearance. At the end,
the Doctor would have hurled himself and the Valeyard into the Vent...
When Saward withdrew his script, Pip and Jane Baker were given Holmes'
episode one and the scripts for The Ultimate Foe were written in three days...
Season 24
Pyramid in Space/The Pyramid's Treasure (1987)
A comedy script submitted by Ian Briggs, involving a 14 year old boy genius
running a huge business empire. It was rejected by Cartmel as too "cartoonish".
Nightfall (1987)
This and an early version of Battlefield were submitted in 1987 by Ben Aaronovitch.
Both were three part stories and quite possibly featured Mel.
Shrine (1987)
A story idea put forward by Marc Platt. "set in nineteenth-centry Russia"
"It was about a race of stone-headed aliens who came to Earth looking for
their reincarnated spiritual leader."
Other
Dimensions in Time (1993)
Filmed and screened as
part of the Children in Need telethon, this special
was roughly 15 minutes long and featured as many of the Doctors and
companions which they could lay their hands on. Mel appears briefly with the
Third Doctor. Unfortunately this adventure was only screened once and is
unlikely to be released on video and so is destined to pass into obscurity.
Because of the largely surrealistic nature of this story, it is uncertain
whether this is the real Mel. (pix provided by Steve Hill)
